Academic Support, Work and Learning (Achieve)

Academic Support, Work and Learning (Achieve) is an after school work and learning project, devoted to those students who are juniors and seniors and who have been unable to pass the 10th grade MCAS in English Language Arts and/or Math. Priority is given to those students with a limited English proficiency, students in special education classes and those whose families are low to moderate income (based upon HUD guidelines). Most of these students will already be engaged in MCAS tutoring during the school day. However, there will be those who are drawn to Academic Support, Work and Learning (Achieve) because of the opportunity for employment and a salary.

Academic Support, Work and Learning (Achieve) occurs after school, with both MCAS remedial tutoring and project based, workplace learning occurring at various companies within the community. TASC provides training and coordination of placement of all students on MA Work-Based Learning Plans as well as job readiness and occupational skills training.

This year, funding for Academic Support, Work and Learning (Achieve) comes from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. and Putnam Investments.

The students gain not only academic knowledge and important work experience but also self-esteem from the constant communication between students, staff, and employers during frequent site visits and tutoring sessions. The worksite supervisors take a special interest in the students’ lives and strengthen our program with their support. For example, one of our companies held a closing party for the students with a cake, balloons, certificates and T-shirts for both students and staff. The supervisors carefully monitor the students during their work time, in an effort to impress them with good work ethics.

Finally, TASC's Career Specialist works with students each week in preparing them to apply for paid positions, to interview with companies and to dress for success. Next year we will continue to have a Life Direction Specialist who will provide follow-up for students who have completed the program and are looking for entry- level positions.
