Applying for a Job

Lesson 1

 

Goal:

    Students will be able to effectively use the skills they have obtained to apply for a job.

 

Objective:

bullet

Students will demonstrate effective job interview skills.

bullet

Students will fill out job applications using the correct information.

bullet

The students will write a resume.

bullet

Students will compose a cover letter.

 

Activities:

bullet

Students will read, discuss, summarize relevant information on graphic organizer, and complete comprehension exercise in Chapter 20 entitled "Applying for jobs of the text Careers" by Globe Fearon.

bullet

The students will then practice completing several types of actual job applications.

bullet

After completing the reading in text referenced above the students will also read, discuss, and summarize important tips on graphic organizer from article entitled "How to Write a Resume a Computer will Love" taken from Career World January 1999.

bullet

Using the format referenced in the article the students will write a resume reflecting their personal information. Upon completion of the rough draft and editing, the students will publish the resume using a computer.

Students will read, discuss, and summarize on a graphic organizer the section referencing cover letters in the text Careers.

bullet

The students will write a cover letter in response to one of the ads from workbook exercise 66.

bullet

The students will read, discuss, and summarize on a graphic organizer the steps of the interview process from Chapter 21 of text Careers and Interview Tips & Bloopers by Jean Ann Cantore from Career World April/May 1999.

bullet

Students will role-play interviews within the classroom. These interviews will be taped and critiqued by the class.

bullet

Students will participate in a job Fair using their prepared resume and interviewing skills.

 

Evaluation:

Students written work will be evaluated using a rubric.

bullet

Peers will critique students' interviews.
